Noryangjin is a rather special area in Seoul, home to the largest fish market in the city and full of cram schools (학원) where children go to study late at night. With so many students frequenting the area, it’s no wonder there is a plethora of cheap street stalls to make for one fun, food-filled excursion. One common street food that’s not really talked about is chicken skewers (닭꼬치). The quality really varies with the place you go to, but one of the best is hands down 삘꼬치네 nestled in Hongdae’s streets that specializes in small food stalls. Seoul Cheap Eats: Mariwhale Macaron (마리웨일 마카롱)
Anyone looking to get their macaron fix should try Mariwhale Macaron. I came across this little store straight in front of exit 5 of the Hongdae University Station (홍댕역). It’s on the 2nd floor. These bite sized pieces of happiness typically go for quite a bit of money, but this place charges a comparatively reasonable 900 won per a macaron! Costco (코스트코) is a huge warehouse store with a ridiculously wide selection of items at some of the best prices. They are based in the U.S., but have a few locations in Korea. Seoul Cheap Eats: Real Kimchi Stirfry Rice (레알김치볶음덥밥)
If you’re ever in the mood to try unique street food, try the Noryangjin Station (노량진역) area. There’s a lot of diversity between food stalls which is actually pretty rare in most areas of Seoul. It’s actually a challenge to find the typical tteokbokki stand here, but that’s a good thing as there are plenty of other foods to entice you. Seoul Cheap Eats: Mapo Mandu (마포만두)
Whenever I come across a dumpling shop with open windows and steam blowing everywhere, i just have to check it out. Mapo Mandu fit that bill and the prices were pretty cheap as well. They have multiple locations, but the one my friend and I went to was in front of the 2nd exit of the Daeheung Station (대흥역) Line 6. You can also find other locations through Seoul by typing (마포만두). Seoul Cheap Eats: Onjeong Tonkatsu (온정돈까스)
Today I went to this super hyped-up Tonkatsu shop called Onjeong Tonkatsu (온정돈까스) which means “warmhearted tonkatsu”. For those who don’t know, a tonkatsu is a pork cutlet that’s lightly friend in panko. It has a nice crispy texture on the outside and is usually quite delicious. Cheap Eats in Seoul: Family Mandu (패밀리 만두)
On my way to the immigration office near the Omokgyo Station (오목교역), I came across this very unassuming chain called 패미리 만두 (Family Mandu) that sold dumplings, dumpling style buns, and of course ramen. The store was very tiny, but what attracted me was the large amounts of steam coming from the pressure steamers. The store was very clean and had a homemade style atmosphere. There was a big bucket of filling and you could see the cook making the dumplings from time to time. You’ll come across the restaurant on the way to the immigration office in Omokgyo. Cheap Eats in Seoul: Jaws Tteokbokki (죠스 떡볶이)
I just came across this really awesome tteokbokki (떡볶이)chain, Jaws Tteokbokki, serving by far some of the best tteokbokki I’ve had from a chain(so far). I’ve been to a few chain restaurants including Pomato, only to be disappointed in their limp, watery tteokbokki. Luckily, I finally found this place!
