I’m usually not a fan of 닭갈비(spicy stir-fry chicken) because it’s usually too dry and greasy, but I decided to disregard my biases and give this place a shot. Luckily, it turned out to be a choice I didn’t regret! For the uninitiated, 닭갈비 is a bit more on the spicy side, so if you’re looking for a little bit of heat in your chicken, this is your place! Less tolerant folk should probably steer clear.
It’s situated quite deep in Sinchon, near Yonsei University.

장군닭갈비(Janggoon Stir-Fry Chicken) – 9,000 won/order (min. 2 orders)
The Janggoon Stir-Fry Chicken is the “regular” dish. It comes precooked, but they still turn the table burner on to finish it off. It has substantial heat, but it’s quite tolerable for a normal person in my opinion. It still may be too much for people who can’t eat spicy food. It comes with chunks of tender chicken, chewy udon noodles, a boiled egg, rice cakes, and crispy potato wedges all bathed in a spicy sauce.

There’s abundant sauce which adds a lot of moisture and flavor to the ingredients. It’s not dry at all like most places I’ve been. It really works well with the chicken and gives a great combination of flavor. I really loved the potatoes, as their texture was absolutely perfect. It wasn’t overdone, with just the right amount of crispiness. I just wish they gave more! During my second outing, the potatoes weren’t nearly as crispy, so perhaps they’re not very consistent. They were still good, but it’s just something to point out.

The noodles really gave a complimentary starchy element to the dish and soaked up the sauce really well. I would’ve liked more noodles instead of the rice cakes as the rice cakes didn’t seem to work as well with the sauce. Adding cheese to the dish didn’t really seem to make it taste all that different in my opinion either.

Like many other places, you have the option of stir-frying rice with the remaining sauce for 3,000 won. They currently have an instagram promotion where they’ll give you a free serving if you tag their restaurant.

Unfortunately, there was just to much mayonnaise in the rice for me to enjoy. Plus, I was extremely full as they are pretty generous with their portions. If you needed rice, I would get the plain one to soak up that delectable sauce.
While not an expert of 닭갈비, this was definitely the most agreeable for me. It didn’t make me feel sick minutes after eating and left a much cleaner feeling in my gut. It’ll definitely be one of my regular places for 닭갈비 whenever I’m in the mood.
